These short and intense workouts provide increased athletic capacity, conditioning, improved glucose metabolism and fat burning. This sort of workouts are ideal for those with limited time to work out on a daily basis.

High intensity interval training sessions generally consist of a warm up period of exercise followed by three to ten repetitions of high intensity exercise. These intense sessions are also separated by medium intensity exercises for recovery until finally ending with a period of cool down exercises. The general protocol for high intensity interval training is a 2:1 ratio of work to recovery periods – for example, you would sprint hard for thirty to forty seconds and alternate with fifteen to twenty seconds of jogging or walking.

Studies have shown that high intensity interval training produced the same sort of biochemical muscle changes that you would see with over ten and a half hours of endurance training and other similar endurance programs. The high intensity interval training increases the resting metabolic rate for the next twenty-four hours due to excess post-exercise oxygen consumption and has even been shown to improve maximal oxygen consumption more effectively over other more traditional types of aerobic workouts.

There are several different types of high intensity interval training programs, so find the right one for you. One of the more popular ones takes you through a ninety day program that anyone at just about any level of fitness can pick up. P90x is popular with those people who don’t have a lot of time or space to devote to working out. P90x is a series of easy to follow videos that take you through the entire workout. It also includes a nutrition program as well, so you’ll also learn how to eat healthier while working out.

Another great option is CrossFit. This can be a little more expensive, but the results are well worth the money. CrossFit is a combination of high intensity interval training, weight lifting, and gymnastics.

Getting in shape quickly isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world either. The more you put into your high intensity interval training program, the better results you’ll see. Having that slim waistline on your wedding day will be the biggest and best reward you’ll ever have.
